The truth behind my New mural at Untitled Hotel in manhattan
I’m just a girl, standing in front of a hotel, with a dream of spray painting an 8x8ft wide open sex mouth on it.
I had been speaking to another mural curator, who is well-regarded and has excellent wall space that he curates in Brooklyn. He was down for giving me a space, but once he’d looked at my work he asked to see what I was going to paint.
For that particular space, it was unpaid, and I’d even be supplying the materials but sometimes those are the best because you can do exactly as you please and there’s no client to impress..
So this request is pretty unusual, and for freebies, it is understood you also have free rein. SO …
I didn’t want to settle for that kind of arrangement. The next day, I put it out on instagram that I was looking for a space bold enough to let me paint this design - no censoring, no holds barred.
Within 12 hours, I had a lead that Zui, the curator at Freeman Alley might be my guy..
And he was.
That same day we were chopping it up, talking about materials, when I’d start, and so on. The entire process was super smooth. The following week, the work began.
I got my materials from Montana Store on Rivington in Manhattan. And met the team at Untitled Hotel, who took really great care of me and fed me insane cheese pastries, for which I am now a few pounds juicer.
The work was complete in 2 days, and I felt pretty knackered after it but deeply proud of the final mural. In fact, I’d love to paint her in a slightly different form, in other locations. If you know a wall curator please let me know (I’ll be in Miami for Basel 6-10 December and could also do a mural then.
What do you think to the final piece?
